Can a rec centre in a National Park boost local economic health while respecting the surrounding environment?
The Banff Recreation Centre serves as a venue for local events and boosts tourism by bringing sports groups to Banff for training and tournaments. It contains two NHL-size hockey rinks, four curling sheets, meeting rooms, offices and coaching spaces for the local Hockey Academy. The curling rink serves as a multi-purpose space for hosting conferences and banquets in the summer to maximize event days.
The site of the Centre was developed to help rehabilitate the sensitive environment nearby. Extensive use of glulam framing and wood finishing gives the Centre a very local feel. In addition, much of the glulam structure was salvaged from an old school and demolished parts of the earlier building and refurbished for use in the new Centre.
